#18 Project Completion (almost!)

We were blessed with good weather the past 17 days, which played a huge roll in us completing the project as quickly as we did. The cart path has been replaced, the irrigation lines have been repaired, and all the sod work has been completed. We will leave the ropes up to keep cart traffic off until the ground firms up and the sod knits together. The area will play as "ground under repair" for the next couple of months or so. Also, we will be topdressing the area several times this summer to help smooth it out.

We are very grateful to have this completed! Thank you for the patience that you extended us throughout this project!

#18 Project Update (Friday afternoon)

Most of the backfilling and grading is now complete and almost all of the fairway has been re-sodded. Early next week, our goal will be to complete the sod work and replace the sections of cart path that we had to remove to replace the pipe. Also, we will be doing a lot of touch up on the sod that we put in the fairway as most of it was laid very quickly Tuesday afternoon in an effort to beat the rain. The plastic that you see in the picture below was put down this afternoon in an effort to keep the area in the rough that we still have to sod as dry as possible with heavy rain forecasted for tomorrow. The hole has been playing as a par 5 again since Wednesday afternoon.

#18 Project Update (Wednesday morning)

The connection of the new pipe to the existing pipe was made yesterday afternoon. We ended up replacing 240' feet of pipe. Upon completion of the tie in, we backfilled the upper portion of the trench in order to establish a temporary cart path. We will continue with backfilling the trench today and possibly begin sodding on the lower end this afternoon.

#18 Project Update (Sunday afternoon)

Late yesterday afternoon, we discovered that we will need to replace 2 more sections (40') of pipe. Those 2 sections will extend us past the cart path, which means that we will now have to remove approximately 35' of the path and re-pour it when finished. We will also now have to contend with the irrigation main line as well. We are hopeful that we will be able to complete the pipe installation by late tomorrow afternoon and begin backfilling the trench with dirt and cleaning up immediately afterwards.

#18 Project Update (Friday evening)

We have made a lot of progress in the last 2 days. We now have 120' of the new pipe installed, which leaves us 60' - 80' to go before we can tie back in to good pipe. The pipe is getting deeper again as we proceed to the upper end of the fairway. We are hopeful that we will dodge any heavy rain tonight and be able to continue working throughout the weekend, in the frigid weather. If all goes well, we should finish installing the pipe either late Sunday afternoon or early Monday morning. Then we will begin cleaning up and putting everything back together.

#18 Project Update (Thursday morning)

We did not have to replace the last 2 sections of pipe by the lake, which was a huge relief. They were a little out of round, but were not cracked. Tying in was a bit challenging due to the slight differences in shape, but we were able to get it done. At the end of the day yesterday(Wednesday), we had installed the first 20' section and dug back the next 2 sections of pipe. Things should go much quicker now that the tie in is complete. We should have a much better idea how much longer that the project will take by the end of the day today.

Drainage Repair Project on #18

Given the window of opportunity, with dry weather forecasted for the next week plus, we made the decision to start the replacement of the failed drainage pipe on #18 this week. The uncertainties of what type of weather that we will have in early March, when we are closed for aerification, was a major factor in the decision

We will be replacing approximately 200' of 36" drainage pipe that is badly damaged. The damage to the pipe is what created the large sinkhole by the lake on #18. An outside contractor will be doing the work, with assistance from the maintenance staff. Due to uncertainties in pipe depth, etc. it is difficult to predict precisely how long the project will take, but we estimate that it will take anywhere from 1-2 weeks to complete.

For both the expedition of the project and the safety of the workers, we have decided to play the hole as a par 3 while work is being done. Please check with the golf shop for how that impacts posting your score. Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding!

We finally made it through the long dog days of summer and have emerged into autumn, albeit, a little tired and weary. With the temperatures on their gradual decline, we get a chance to catch our breath around here and cruise through fall taking advantage of what a beautiful place The Legacy Course becomes when the leaves begin to change. Below are just a few select scenes from around the course.

The ryegrass is coming in nicely on the practice range.

However, as we wish it would stay "Octember" all year, the leaves do eventually fall off the trees and we do our best at keeping the course clean for play. We use a combination of pull-behind turbine debris blowers and a tractor driven Rake-O-Vac to try and keep up with the falling leaves.

FROST!

We received our first frost of the season on October 21. This is about average for this part of the state. Please be sure to read through the Frost Delays tab on the blog for information on how frost and freezing temperatures affect the golf course. Post Aerification Update II

The greens are healing well from aerification. They are still soft to hit in to, only rolling about 8 1/2, and a little bumpy, but they are decent to play on. We have begun working the height of cut back down and should be back to the height that we were at prior to aerification by next weekend. I have included a couple of pictures from this morning below.

The greens were mowed Wednesday for the first time since aerification. The height of cut was raised .025" from where we left off prior to aerification to minimize, as much as possible, the mowers getting into the topdressing sand. We will work the height back down as they heal.

Yesterday we vented the greens with bayonet tines. We did this to create deeper channels for root growth in the greens profile. We achieved approximately 4 1/2 inches of depth with the bayonet tines in comparison to 3 inches with the coring tines last week. Also, this along with rolling immediately afterwards, helps smooth out any light ruts created during the topdressing and brushing process following core aerification. I have included a picture below of the bayonets in action.

The greens were mowed again today. The picture below was taken following today's cut. Even though we are closed, we will be mowing this weekend to continue grooming them for when we open back up on Monday.

Fall Greens Aerification

We completed our fall greens aerification on Thursday. We removed approximately 3.93% of the surface area of the greens by using .5" inside diameter tines on a 2" x 2.5" spacing. We aerified to a depth of 3". Following aerification, we cleaned the cores off of the greens, applied topdressing sand, and brushed the sand into the aerification holes. We will brush the greens one more time, roll them, and then let them be until they are ready to be mowed early next week. We are scheduled to reopen on Monday, September 26th. We will provide updates throughout the healing process.

We have been very busy since our last update! This summer seems like it just does not want to end! Despite that the greens are hanging in there fine. The guys watering greens, on the other hand, are ready for a break! We are looking forward to greens aerification in 2 weeks on the 15th! Fairway Cut Modifications

As recommended by Steve Weisser in his report, we made modifications to the fairway cut lines on several holes this week. We widened the fairway's approach into the green on holes 6,11,15, and 16. The cut line had come in over time and we are merely trying to restore the original one. We also extended the fairway on 15 toward the tee to shorten the carry to the fairway. That area will require a lot of topdressing to smooth it out and get it up to fairway standards. We will also have to eradicate the bermudagrass and re-sod the area with zoysiagrass in the future to maintain the consistency of zoysiagrass in the fairways. We will have to do the same on the approaches that we modified as well, since they are heavily contaminated with bermudagrass. You can see the change in the cut line in the pictures below. The areas being reverted to fairway are brown due to scalping while bringing the height of cut down.

Greens Venting

Venting is an important practice on bentgrass greens throughout the hot summers. Venting, or creating open channels for the movement of air, water, and gases in the greens profile, is critical to the health of the greens. There are several different ways to vent, but we have found that venting with solid tines works best for us. We use a variation of tines, with a wide range of aggessiveness.

We have vented greens the last two weeks with very small (.2" diameter) pencil tines. This is the least aggressive form of venting that we do. It has very little effect on the playability of the greens. In addition to the pencil tines, we also pulled small cores around the outer perimeters of the greens this week. We went 30" wide and used .2" inside diameter (.36" outside diameter) coring tines. We chose to be more aggressive on the edges and provide more relief, as these are the areas that encounter the most stress. We chose not to fill the larger holes on the perimeters with sand, but we did lightly topdress all of the greens this week.

Our goal is to hold off of the more aggressive venting until two weeks after the Member/Member Tournament, when the Founders Course has opened back up following their greens aerification.

Steve Weisser Visit

Steve Weisser, of Rees Jones, Inc., paid us a visit this week. Steve was the lead designer of the Legacy Course. We brought him in at the request of the Building & Grounds Committee to provide guidance for future course improvements. We had a really good visit! I will go more into detail about his recommendations after I have received and reviewed his follow up report.

Updated Moisture Index

As you can tell from the index below, we have seen a dramatic improvement in soil moisture in the last two weeks! We are now at a rainfall deficit of only .35" year to date, here at the Legacy Course. It is amazing how quickly the weather can change in Alabama!

Drought Relief!

We have received some much needed rain over the past 6 days! We recorded .80" last Friday, .50" yesterday, and have received .30" already today as I write this, with a good chance of more rain today and through the weekend as well. Our irrigation supply lakes could use a lot more, especially the one behind #11 green. It is about 6 foot low right now, which equates to approximately 10 million gallons of water. As a point of reference, our average monthly useage May - September is about 6.2 million gallons per month.

Although summer does not officially start to June 21, it sure seems as though it is already here! May was a very hot and dry month and the indicators point to much of the same through at least mid-June!

Legacy Club House Summer Annuals
and Landscape Renovations

As the seasons change, temperatures increase, and the days get longer, the smell of freshly mowed grass, birds singing, and the sound of the scurry of setting up the golf course for a busy morning of play permeate the last of the cool spring mornings in our lovely little valley. This time of year also brings the changing of the annual flowers around the club house. Over the past years we've learned what works, performs best, and is least appetizing for our pet deer.

This year we went with some old favorites and good performers from last year’s endurance test, thanks to one of the longest and hottest summers on record. Dragon wing begonia, scaevola, angelonia, coleus, lantana, and purple fountain grass are a few of the chosen plants for this season. Below are some pictures of the installation process.

Landscape Renovations

This year we are able to do some landscape renovations at the clubhouse by filling in open areas and replacing plants that were past their prime. We concentrated on the front door entrance of the clubhouse to give the landscape a cleaner, balanced, and more welcoming look. We replaced some of the scraggly dwarf yaupons with 3 gallon Carrisa hollies and Maiden Hair grass.

We also renovated the area on either side of the walkway that leads to the Men's Grill in the back of the clubhouse by planting gardenias, itea, and butterfly bushes.

Spring Member/Guest Preparations

Our preparations are ongoing for our Spring Member/Guest Tournament which takes place this Thursday through Saturday. Most of the tasks which we are performing are routine. However, we do place a lot of emphasis on the timing of detail items, such as the edging of bunkers, cart paths, irrigation heads, and yardage plates, in an effort to peak at the right time. We also increase the mowing frequency on tees, fairways, and greens, with the greens receiving the most emphasis. They will be rolled daily during the tournament to help increase the speed, firmness, and smoothness of the ball roll. We are on schedule with preparations and are looking forward to the tournament!

We did have some damage from yesterday's storms, but feel very fortunate after seeing and hearing about the damage that many others encountered. We lost about 25 total trees, most of which are in the wood lines and will go unnoticed. The most noticeable tree that was lost was a big oak tree, which was to the left of the greenside bunker on 10. We were very fortunate that it did not land on the green, as it would have done if the wind was blowing slightly more to the east. We are busy with cleanup and most of the damage that we incurred will most likely go unnoticed as you make your way around the course. My thoughts and prayers are with those who have suffered significant losses in these storms.

ISTRC Report

We took a core from #7 green in March and sent it to the International Sports Turf Research Center(ISTRC) for evaluation of the soil's physical properties. We chose to do the test to evaluate where the greens are now and also to establish a benchmark that will enable us, through annual testing, to evaluate the effectiveness of each year's cultural practices.

The report that we received contained two sets of data. The first set of data consists of the physical evaluation, the evaluation of the root systems, and the measurement of the organic matter by layer.  According to the report, #7 green is in good physical condition for its age and turf type. The infiltration rate was excellent and the air capacity to water porosity ratio was approximately 1:1, which is ideal. The organic matter in the top inch was 2.35%, which is in the acceptable range of 1.5%-2.5% for well-drained greens, but is a little higher than we would like and something that we will have to continually monitor in the upcoming years. The organic material in the next 3" was fine. In regards to the root system, the root mass was acceptable, but the feeder roots were shorter than desirable.

The second set of data contains the textural and particle size analysis. The texture of our sample had a favorable matrix of soil types as well as a good distribution of particle sizes throughout the profile. This is a result of the greens being constructed on a good mix as well as a quality topdressing sand being used during light topdressings and to fill holes following core aerifications.

The agronomist reported that the physical properties of the greens resembled 4-5 year old greens as opposed to the almost 12 year old greens that they are. He attributed that to the cultural program that the greens are on and emphasized the importance of staying on that program or one similar.  Furthermore, he provided the general recommendation of an aerification program that targets at least 15% annual surface area displacement in conjunction with regular ventings to keep the root zone opened up and breathing. This is consistent with the program we have in place and will continue to use in the future.

In summation, this test is basically about the nature and composition of pore spaces in the soil and the contributing factors. Those pore spaces are the lifeline of the grass as they allow the infiltration of air and water into and through the soil profile, as well as permit the release of carbon-dioxide rich soil gases, which can be very harmful to the grass. Without proper pore spacing, the plant will be very limited in its ability to obtain water, oxygen, and nutrients. As aforementioned, the pore space on the sampled core was ideal. The biggest concern from the report was the percentage of organic material in the top inch of the profile, which is common in older greens.  It was still in an acceptable range, but we must focus on keeping that number in check through our current aerification program as well as increased light topdressings.

In closing, although we treat all the greens the same, it is important to remember that this test was performed on one plug taken from one green. We assume that this is a good assessment of the soil profile of all greens, but will not have a great understanding of just how accurate that it is until we test another green, which we intend to do next year. Starting next year, we plan on testing one location on two greens every year. We will use the same location on those two greens each year as well. This should greatly improve the accuracy of the results and be a wonderful tool to help us continually evaluate the effectiveness of our agronomic program on greens.

Storm Damage

The storm last night did not produce a lot of rain, but it did cause a good deal of damage. We had 4 large trees taken down by the straight line winds and another large tree struck by lightning. It left us with a lot of debris to cleanup as well. I have added some pictures below.

Purple Fairways

Every spring Meyer zoysiagrass goes through a seeding stage. During this stage, the seedheads are visible and the fairways are not very attractive to the eye. The seedheads give the fairways a purplish appearance, especially when they go unmowed for several days. I have added some pictures below to help illustrate. The seedheads should subside in a couple of weeks when we get more consistent warm temperatures.

Fertilizer/Pre-emergent Herbicide Application

We made our spring and summer fertilizer/pre-emergent herbicide application this week. The herbicide is impregnated onto the fertilizer granules so that both products may be spread together. The herbicide that we used is called Ronstar(oxadiazon). It is a very effective herbicide that targets annual grasses and broadleaf weeds. It controls weeds through the shoots, not the roots and therefore is not harmful to the roots of turfgrasses, like many other pre-emergents are.

The fertilizer that we used contained some quick release nitrogen to give the grass a jump start as well as a controlled-release nitrogen to spoon feed the grass throughout the summer. The controlled-released fertilizer that we used is called Polyon. The video below explains how Polyon works.

The bulk of the application was spread by Harrell's, the supplier of the product.

We followed up around greens and other areas that the truck could not get with push spreaders.

Following the application, the product was watered in thoroughly to release the pre-emergent into the soil and create the barrier for weeds. The barrier should last us until the fall.

Greens Aerification

We core aerified greens on Monday and Tuesday of this week. Core aerification has many benefits, the main one being the removal of unwanted organic material in the upper part of the rootzone. Other important benefits include: reduction of compaction, improved soil/gas exchange, stimulation of new root development, stimulation of microbial activity, and improvement of the plant's ability to withstand stresses. I have included an outline of our aerification process below.

Here is a video of the aerifier in action. We used .5" inside diameter tines on 1.6" x 1.75" spacing, which removed approximately 7% of the surface area of the greens.

We use blowers and plug pushers to move the plugs to the edges of the greens. We are careful to minimize the amount of holes that we seal off on the surface while removing the old material.

We then load the plugs in carts and haul them off.

Next, we apply sand with a pull behind topdresser.

After the sand has dried, we brush the greens with a pull behind brush and hand brooms as needed to get the sand into the aerification holes. The sand in the aerification holes will help the soil retain air space, which is vital to the health of the greens.

Waterfall Update

The waterfall pump was pulled yesterday for repairs. After removal it was hauled to a machine shop where the repairs will be made. The motor will be rewound and the seals and bearings will be replaced. Also, the impeller will be checked for damage. If all goes as planned, it should be back up and running in a couple of weeks.

Bunker Sand Selection

Since we are in the middle of bunker maintenance, I thought that I would take a moment to talk about bunker sand. Several factors go into selecting bunker sand. The USGA offers guidelines for determining the suitability of bunker sand for golf courses. We have always followed those guidelines when choosing our sand. According to those guidelines, seven factors should be considered when making the decision. They are particle size, particle shape and penetrometer value, crusting potential, chemical reaction (pH) and hardiness, infiltration rate, color, and overall playing quality. I have attached a link to the USGA website below that goes into much greater detail about each factor. I would like to encourage you to take a look at it so that you can fully understand the detail that is involved.

Below is a copy of the physical properties testing on the bunker sand that we used in 2010. We have utilized the same supplier for the past 8 years. They have their sand tested every year by an accredited laboratory.

Bunker Maintenance

What exactly is bunker maintenance and why do we do it? For us, bunker maintenance is a simple 2 step process that involves evaluating the depth of sand in each bunker and adding or removing sand accordingly. We do this at the first of each year to help maintain consistency in regards to playability as well as to help minimize washouts during heavy rain events. How do we lose consistency? We lose consistency throughout the year primarily due to washouts caused by heavy rains. During these events, the bunkers can wash out and become heavily contaminated with silt in the low lying areas of the bunkers. If not removed, the silt will change the characteristics of the sand and greatly reduce the percolation of water through the bunkers. In the process of removing the silt, the top half inch or so of the sand is usually removed as well in order to ensure total silt removal. I have outlined the bunker maintenance process below.

First of all, we start by checking the depth of the sand throughout each bunker. We do this with a standard soil probe which we add a 6" depth marking to. We have found that our bunkers perform best at a 6" minimum depth and that is the depth that we try to maintain. As you can see in the video below, Esteban is checking the bunker very thoroughly. After he checks an area, he will mark areas that need adjusted.

After the bunker is thoroughly checked, the next step is to move sand around or add new sand as needed.

We will then spread the sand out with either the Sand Pro machine or manually with rakes as seen here.

After that we will re-check our depths and then detail the bunker before moving on to the next one.

This process usually takes about 4-5 weeks to complete, based on average weather and labor inputs. Over the past 5 years, we have added an average of 200 tons (7-8 tandem loads) of new bunker sand per year.

Soil Testing

We collected soil samples last week on greens, tees, and fairways. Every year we take samples the first week of February on the same 6 holes. This consistency with timing and location helps us to minimize fluctuations in sampling. We pull the cores and send the samples to A & L Analytical Laboratories in Memphis, Tennessee. We have utilized this lab for the past 9 years, which also aids in consistency. They test our samples for major nutrients, secondary nutrients, minor nutrients, soil pH, organic matter percentages, and cation exchange capacities. From this test we can see the status of our nutrient levels and easily identify deficiencies and possible toxicities. We use these results from the soil testing to help plan our fertility applications for the year. Soil testing is a very important tool for achieving and maintaining optimum fertility conditions.

Waterfall Update

The waterfall pump is malfunctioning and either needs to be pulled and repaired or replaced. We are currently awaiting some estimates so that we can more accurately assess our options. We apologize for the inconvenience. I will provide another update when we have a plan and are moving forward.
